Although Jesus was the son of God because he was born of the Holy Spirit, he was also the son of Joseph because Joseph adopted him. As a son of Joseph, Jesus was considered a son of David because Joseph was also a descendent of King David. If you wonder whether Jesus was really a son of David, just remember that ancient Israelites adopted sons and thus made them descendants.
Others say that Jesus is not the rightful son of David because God took away the signet ring of Jechoniah who was also called Jehoiachin (Jeremiah 22:24) during the Babylonian Exile when he was carried off to Babylonia. This objection however is not worrisome since God also gave the signet ring back to his grandson Zerubbabel (Haggai 2:23) who then was one of the progenitors of Joseph.
The real cruz of the matter is that Jesus fulfilled the prophecies of the Messiah. He not only descendent from David, but he was born in Bethlehem as Micah 5:1 predicts. And as Isaiah foresaw, he was to be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14). For these reasons too, he is fulfillment of the prophecies regarding the Messiah.
Matthew tells us of more prophecies that Jesus fulfilled. In Jeremiah where it says that Rachel is going to grieve her children and refuse to be comforted because her children are gone, Matthew sees the fulfillment in Herod's massacre of boy infants in Bethlehem as he was searching for the Messiah. And Matthew also sees the fulfillment of the prophecy in Hosea that God will call his son out of Egypt when Jesus is taken down to Egypt to escape Herod's anger.
The fulfillment of two additional prophecies during Jesus' baptism rounds out this proof of Jesus' Messiahship for Matthew. Matthew finds that John the Baptist is the voice crying out in the wilderness saying: "Prepare the way of the Lord!" that we find in Isaiah 40:3. And he finds that Jesus is the fulfillment of Isaiah 42:1 when a voice from heaven declares of Jesus during his baptism: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
